Razor blades found in Halloween candy in Upstate NY, police say

Police say they’re investigating a report of tampered Halloween candy in Upstate New York.
New York State Police said candy containing razor blades was reportedly collected in the Chenango County village of Bainbridge on Thursday, Oct. 31. Police announced an open investigation on Saturday.
Police reminded parents of safety precautions, including:
If any tampered candy is suspected, do not allow children to eat the potentially contaminated sweets and contact New York State Police at their Sidney office immediately. Police may request information that may aid in identifying the responsible individual(s), according to a press release.
You can contact the New York State Police at Sidney at 607-561-7400.
No injuries have been reported.
Most tales of Halloween candy being poisoned, drugged or stuffed with razor blades are a myth — largely related to fears of Tylenol poisonings in the 1980s — but authorities still regularly encourage parents to check their children’s candy, including for possible treats that have been tampered with or laced with drugs. Warning signs include an unusual appearance or any discoloration; tiny pinholes or tears in wrappers; unwrapped items; and homemade items or baked goods (unless you personally know who handed them out).
Past reports of issues have included marijuana edibles allegedly given to a child while trick-or-treating in St. Lawrence County last year, and nails allegedly found in Almond Joy candy bars in Watertown in 2020.
